There’s a fantastic vision, oft conjured,

that goes something like this: artists lounge about, debauched and half sober, their muses occasionally tearing them from hedonistic distraction, pressing them to their work. Inspiration crashes upon them like a lightening strike and thus animates them to their purpose. Genius ensues.

Being an artist happens to them, discipline isn’t part of the equation.

Personally, I love that for us, and damn how I wish it were (universally) true. (I imagine a chosen few inhabit this enchanted realm. It’s not me, though.)

This mythology riffs on the notion that creatives simply cruise on inborn talent, and misses just how much dedication and work creating takes. It can be a job - not exactly like any other - but no less demanding.
